Saturday, 10 October 2020 @ 8:30 am – 1 pm – Building A Wicking Bed

Ever wondered how you can develop a self-watering system for your vegetable garden that is water and time efficient? Well, a wicking bed is the answer for you.

Invented by an Australian named Colin Austin, the idea is that you capture water in the bottom of the bed with a waterproof liner or layer. This creates a reservoir of water below the soil layer. Then, rather than you having to irrigate by watering from above (via drip irrigation, a hose, watering can), the reservoir is filled with water ever so often and the water literally wicks up into the soil from below, keeping it nice and moist. This encourages the plants to put down deep strong roots in search of water. A good wicking bed once filled can water your plants for up to 3 weeks without a refill.

Join Gympie Community Gardens as we teach you how to build your own wicking bed. This is a hands-on workshop where participants will get involved in building a wicking bed.
