Our garden volunteers are excited to have been accepted into Landcare’s new “Greening Gympie” program, which came about thanks to generous local donors who would like to see spaces greened with trees and plants appropriate to our region.
Members and volunteers from the community garden were able to select 50 trees, which will help protect the Gympie region’s incredible biodiversity. It will also contribute towards the community garden’s objective of establishing a garden that is “a positive and diverse environment”.
Trees were selected by volunteers as well as the garden’s designer, Lani Roberts, with expert advice from the very helpful nursery staff at Gympie
Landcare. Some of the trees being planted at the garden include: peanut trees, oolines, coffee bushes, solo plums, supple jacks, red
cedar, dwarf tuckeroo, kurrajong and plum pine. And more.
These will create ecosystems suitable to Gympie’s climate and will become an educational resource for interested members of our community.
The community garden has had some challenges digging holes in some places as the land was previously a dump. A lot of sweat and tears have been spilled.
But a bit of fun and satisfaction has been had as well.
The donated trees will line pathways through the garden and will edge areas like the future, planned village green and Zen garden.
Alexandra Van Beek, President of Gympie & District Landcare said, “We look forward to seeing our trees grow as part of the continuing growth and development of the Gympie Community Gardens. I’m looking forward to wandering through the garden and seeing Landcare trees being a part of it”.
